Wang Yi Meets with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry

On September 24, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York.

Wang Yi said that President Xi Jinping and President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi have maintained close communication, providing strong strategic guidance for China-Egypt relations. Bilateral cooperation in fighting the pandemic and promoting respective development has added to the strong momentum of development in China-Egypt comprehensive strategic partnership. China firmly supports the Egyptian people in exploring a development path befitting their national conditions, supports Egypt’s effort for national rejuvenation, and is ready to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with Egypt. China will also enhance solidarity and coordination with Egypt on international and regional affairs to safeguard the common interests of the two countries, protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, and uphold fairness and justice.

Shoukry said that Egypt and China have always respected, trusted and supported each other. Egypt is proud of the strong Egypt-China relationship, and satisfied with the achievements of Egypt-China practical cooperation. Egypt is firmly committed to the one-China principle, opposes all acts that violate the one-China principle and escalate tensions, and supports China in taking legitimate measures to safeguard its sovereignty. Egypt opposes any move to form anti-China camps or incite antagonism and confrontation. Egypt is ready to enhance coordination with China in multilateral settings to maintain solidarity of developing countries.

The two sides will promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, sign the implementation plan and the second five-year outline for strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries as soon as possible, and expand financial cooperation. Shoukry said that China's development is an opportunity for Egypt, and his country welcomes Chinese investment and looks forward to strengthening tripartite cooperation with China in Africa.

The two sides will strengthen cooperation in pandemic response to help Egypt build the largest vaccine storage center in Africa.

The two sides will ramp up cooperation in climate change response, and China supports Egypt in hosting a successful 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The two sides expressed concerns over the food and energy shortage caused by the spillover effects of the Ukraine crisis, and believed it important to push for political settlement of the crisis, promote early recovery of the global economy, and effectively safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries.
